Susan G. Komen Founder Selected as Speaker for Network 2000 Women of Excellence Luncheon

BALTIMORE—Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® will be the featured speaker at Network 2000’s Women of Excellence luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 4, at noon at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. This annual event is Network 2000’s primary fundraiser and proceeds support both its mission as well as other charitable organizations who share its goals. Network 2000 is an organization promoting the advancement of women in the corporate world.

Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® organization in 1982 after promising her 36 year old dying sister that she would spread the word about breast cancer and end the shame and hopelessness caused by the disease. With more than 2 million survivors today, Komen for the Cure® is now the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists with more than 200 countries and over 300 global and national companies sharing in Komen’s commitment to raise awareness and end the disease forever. Brinker also pioneered cause-related marketing and established the color pink as the iconic representation for breast cancer. Race for the Cure ®, also founded by Brinker, is the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer.

From 2001-2003, Brinker was U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary, and she served as U.S. Chief of Protocol from 2007-2009, where she was responsible for overseeing all protocol matters for visiting heads of state and presidential travel abroad. In 2008, President George W. Bush appointed Brinker to the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees.

President Barack Obama honored Brinker with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, which is the highest civilian honor for her determination to participate in the battle against breast cancer. The same year, she was named Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control for the United Nations’ World Health Organization, where she continues today her mission to put cancer control at the top of the world health agenda. Additionally, Brinker was named to TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2008 and one of Biography magazine’s 25 Most Powerful Women in America.
